American Fraud

Paul Krugman wrote an excellent column today, which was reprinted throughout the country. I read it in the San Jose Mercury News this morning. I will link to it, but you need to subscribe in order to read the linked version.

Paul’s main point is that the Bush administration has used fraud for political gain. It wasn’t one incident , it was a series declarations and speeches that were meant to mislead the American people into believing that the Bush administration was working in our best interest. After the last two months we have seen that the Bush administration clearly lied to us. The safeguards of the American people are the media and the politicians. Paul tells us that it is now clear that both the media and the Democrats failed to protect us.

When a company uses fraud to rob Americans many people are effected. But, if the truth about the fraud is made public, then the people become more careful and the company in question will no longer be able to defraud as many people. In our system of politics the opposition party and the media are the instruments that shed light on the system.

Paul goes into the details of the fraud the Bush administration foist upon us. And, he has these recommendations to prevent it form happening again.

First, politicians will have to admit that they were misled.

Second, the news media will have to face up to their role in allowing incompetents to pose as leaders and political apparatchiks to pose as patriots.

Like any scam, we can not protect people who deny the scam. We can not protect people who ignore public proclamations about the fraud. We can only hope that we reach as many people as we can and these people act on what they hear. If enough people refuse to buy into the scam, then it will no longer be worth while for the crooks to propagate the scam.

So, lets all remember what George W Bush said in the light of the failed FEMA response to Hurricane Katrina, "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job." If this isn’t clear evidence of the fraud perpetrated by the Bush administration then I’ll give you ten more. But, for Bush to praise the man who was leading one of the worst disaster relief efforts in American history with no idea of how to do it, with no resources to do it and no experience in doing this making no progress for more than a week one can only see fraud. Then, to consider how this man got his job and to know that FEMA is littered with political appointments of similar caliber while the Bush administration claims to be “working hard” to protect the American people rings of even more fraud. This is just one department in a large bureaucracy, where we can assume that more of the same.

Fortunately, today the Senate has gone into closed session in the second stage of the investigation into why the US invaded Iraq. More to come, hopefully.

Whatever our politics beliefs, perhaps we could both agree that dishonest businesses like nationmasters are frauds? :)
