What Do The Iraqis Think?

These polls have been around for quite some time, but the supporters of the War in Iraqi either ignore this information or they don’t know about it. So, I thought that I should publicize this to the few War supporters who are supporting the war and they don’t really know how the Iraqi people actually feel.

The latest Poll was published in USA Today Yesterday. So, I’m sure that at least the people who flew on Continental Airlines yesterday morning and received their complementary copy know this. (If they do that any more.)

The real point of this post is that the Iraqis don’t want us in their country. Asked whether they view the Americans as occupiers of liberators, 71% of Iraqis said we are occupiers. That number rises to 81% if the Kurds are removed from the survey. Of course this is because life is swell in Northern Iraq where the Kurds live. In the rest of the country the presence of the American troops are making things worse.

If this isn’t bad enough, the poll tells us, “If the Kurds, who make up about 13% of the poll, are taken out of the equation, more than half of Iraqis say killing U.S. troops can be justified in at least some cases.” Since we aren’t really fighting in Northern Iraq, doesn’t that mean that the majority of those we have come to liberate feel justified in killing American soldiers. That does not seem like some small radical insurgency, it is half of the country.

How long will it take for George W Bush to learn this? The answer my friend is blowing in the wind, right past George W Bush, because he doesn’t actually read his daily briefings, the newspapers or even watch the nightly news.

If the Iraq people want us out of there then we should respect their decision, but your poll article also revealed these facts -

"The growing negative attitude toward the Americans is also reflected in two related survey questions: 53% say they would feel less secure without the coalition in Iraq, but 57% say the foreign troops should leave anyway."

- note the last key words...leave anyway...

"That negative opinion of the behavior of the troops rarely is based on direct contact. Iraq is a country the size of California with a population of 25 million. Many areas are sparsely patrolled. Only 7% in the poll say they based their opinions on personal experience."

A lot of these Iraq people who are being polled are expressing negative opinions after watching the news. Lots of people can be fooled by negative propaganda... Also it looks like the Iraq people admit to the fact that while they want American people out, they still would feel less secure without the American coalition...I just think President Bush is making an honest effort to help them and we shouldn't hate him for that. A lot of Iraq people are happy Saddam is gone! But yes, it probably is a great idea to get out now...in fact I think we are starting to pull out rapidly now...

Oh yeah, and the Iraq people seem to be basing their negative opinions off of the "corrupt activities" of US soldiers. I don't know too much about how soldiers act over in Iraq, but the fact that they were willing to die to kick Saddam out and help the Iraq people leads me to believe they wouldn't do anything like steal money from the Iraq people...that's what the article said the Iraq people believed American soldiers did :( That's another reason I believe that perhaps the Iraq people buy too much into their news...

sorry, not that their news is bad! Even our news, by only showing certain sides, can lead us to different conclusions...

Gina,

You said:
"Lots of people can be fooled by negative propaganda... "

And, that's why there are still people in the USA that support this president...

BTW, who is spread this so called propaganda in Iraq? The US is in charge, the control the country and the propaganda is still being spread?

Forbush, lol

"the control the country and the propaganda is still being spread?"

Are you advocating press censorship by the MFI?

I'm confused about the poll you linked to. It's dated April 28, 2004 but you say it was published in USA Today yesterday?

Derek, You make an excellent point. I linked to an earlier poll that basically says the same thing as a more recent poll. A newer poll is: London's Daily Telegraph (Oct. 23, 2005).

Dan, I am not advocating that we should do it, but it is already being done according to a report published recently.

Dr. Forbush,

The October 23rd article in the Telegraph is referencing a "secret" poll done by the British military, and doesn't provide any information about the demographics. And they don't exactly show the same thing, the more recent secret poll is much more negative. Certainly the devil with polls is in the details, as with most things. There have been other polls showing the difference nearly as split as the US population is on the same subject.

Show me a poll that shows the "difference nearly as split as the US population." I haven't seen it. You just gave me another source for the same poll I quote that shows among other things:

• 82 per cent are "strongly opposed" to the presence of coalition troops;

• less than one per cent of the population believes coalition forces are responsible for any improvement in security;

• 67 per cent of Iraqis feel less secure because of the occupation;

• 43 per cent of Iraqis believe conditions for peace and stability have worsened;

• 72 per cent do not have confidence in the multi-national forces.
